2003 Saturn Ion OBDII Port Issues and Intermittent Starting Problems

A 2003 Saturn Ion experiences intermittent starting and engine shutoff issues, accompanied by warning lights on the dashboard such as PWR STR, COOLANT, TRACTION, and ABS. The vehicle may not start at all, or it may start and then shut off while driving, regardless of speed or outside temperature. Additionally, there is no power to the OBDII port or the trunk button.

Several troubleshooting steps have already been taken to address the problem:

  • ECM Replacement: The Engine Control Module (ECM) has been replaced with a refurbished unit.
  • Ground Cleaning: The main ground connections from the engine to the battery have been cleaned.
  • Ignition Switch Replacement: The ignition switch has been replaced with one from a 2007 model.
  • Fuse Check: All fuses have been checked.
  • New Battery: A brand new battery has been installed.

Despite these efforts, the problem persists. When the key is turned to the “RUN” position, the dashboard warning lights illuminate, but the engine may not crank. Sometimes, the warning lights will go off and the car will start normally. While driving, the engine may suddenly lose power, causing the dashboard lights to come on, but the radio and other electrical accessories remain functional. The lack of power to the OBDII port hinders further diagnostics. This prevents the use of a code reader to identify specific Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) that could pinpoint the cause of the issue.

Possible causes for these issues could include a faulty wiring harness, a problem with the Body Control Module (BCM), or a malfunctioning crankshaft position sensor. Without access to the OBDII port, diagnosing the root cause becomes significantly more challenging. Resolving the OBDII port power issue is crucial for retrieving diagnostic codes and effectively troubleshooting the starting and engine shutoff problems. Consulting a qualified automotive technician specializing in Saturn vehicles is recommended to diagnose and repair these complex electrical issues.
