However, it’s crucial to understand that the 300ZX, particularly models from its production era, primarily utilizes an earlier diagnostic system known as OBD-I, often referred to as the Consult 1 port in Nissan terminology. This distinction is key because OBD-I operates fundamentally differently from the more modern OBDII systems found in later vehicles.
The Consult 1 system, unlike OBDII, is designed as a single-master communication protocol. This means that only one device can effectively communicate with the Engine Control Unit (ECU) at a time. In essence, the system is set up for a single diagnostic tool to interface with the car’s computer. When a diagnostic device is connected to the Consult 1 port, it initiates communication by sending a series of “Hello ECU” messages, specifying which ECU it intends to communicate with, such as the ECCS, A/T ECU, HICAS ECU, or A/C ECU. The targeted ECU then responds and maintains communication until another ECU is addressed.
This contrasts sharply with the OBDII system, which allows for multiple masters. In an OBDII environment, various devices can request data from sensors, and sensors respond with the requested information. This multi-master capability is a significant advancement over OBD-I, offering greater flexibility and potential for simultaneous data access from different modules and sensors.
Consequently, directly connecting multiple diagnostic tools or devices to the 300ZX’s Consult 1 port for simultaneous operation is generally not feasible without encountering communication conflicts. The system is simply not designed to manage multiple devices attempting to communicate on the data line concurrently. While there might be sophisticated workarounds or proxy devices, like ECU Talk, that attempt to bridge this gap, the fundamental limitation of the OBD-I protocol remains.
