Cen-Tech OBDII & CAN Scan Tool with ABS Review: A User’s Perspective

The Cen-Tech OBDII & CAN Scan Tool, often purchased with a Harbor Freight discount, offers ABS support and a variety of features for around $99. However, initial impressions of this scan tool reveal some questionable functionalities that may impact user experience.

Questionable Features and Performance

Several issues have arisen during initial use of the Cen-Tech scan tool:

Screen Readability

The screen is difficult to read when the unit is unplugged from the vehicle’s OBDII port. The illumination seems significantly dimmer compared to when it’s connected, even with a new battery installed. This makes reviewing captured data offline inconvenient.

Data Capture Inconsistencies

The device can store three data captures before overwriting. Testing on a 2002 Impala and a 2011 Equinox revealed inconsistencies. While three captures are displayed, two often contain identical data when reviewed off the vehicle. However, when reconnected to the vehicle, all three distinct captures reappear. Furthermore, the Impala data capture unexpectedly jumped from 54 to 59 data points without displaying any new information.

Automatic Data Capture Trigger

The “Complete Data Set” with “Manual Trigger” function, which should require a manual start, began triggering automatically. This occurred even after clearing the Check Engine Light (CEL), despite the trigger being potentially linked to the CEL status. This erratic behavior raises concerns about the reliability of the data capture process.

Comparing to Other Options

Previous experience with a reliable, albeit basic, Actron code reader highlights the Cen-Tech’s shortcomings. While the Actron lacked CAN capabilities for newer vehicles like the Equinox, its consistent performance contrasts with the Cen-Tech’s erratic behavior. The initial intention to utilize a laptop-based system with ScanTool hardware was abandoned due to negative reviews regarding connection stability issues with the ScanTool MX.

Conclusion: Is the Cen-Tech OBDII Scanner Worth It?

The Cen-Tech OBDII & CAN Scan Tool with ABS offers functionality beyond basic code reading at an attractive price point. However, the screen readability issues, data capture inconsistencies, and automatic trigger malfunction raise concerns about its reliability and usability. These issues may necessitate further troubleshooting or consideration of alternative scan tools. Further user feedback and long-term testing are needed to determine the true value and dependability of this device.
