VCDS Release Hand Brake: A Step-by-Step Guide

Opening and closing the electronic parking brake (EPB) for brake pad replacement requires specific procedures using VCDS. Incorrect execution can lead to system errors and potential brake failure. This guide outlines the correct steps for releasing and resetting the rear parking brake using VCDS.

Releasing the Rear Parking Brake with VCDS

Crucial Prerequisites: Ensure all rear brake components are fully assembled before proceeding. Connect a battery charger according to your vehicle’s repair manual. Cycle the parking brake ON and then OFF. This initial step is vital for proper system initialization.

VCDS Procedure:

  1. Access Parking Brake Basic Settings: Navigate to [Select] [53 – Parking Brake] [Basic Settings – 04] within the VCDS software.
  2. Activate Lining Change Mode: Select “Start lining change mode” and click [Go!]. This command signals the EPB system to retract the caliper pistons, allowing for pad replacement.
  3. Confirmation: Wait for the “Finished Correctly” message to appear on the VCDS screen. Once confirmed, click [Stop], followed by [Done, Go Back], and then [Close Controller, Go Back – 06].
  4. Manual Piston Reset: With the ignition OFF and the battery charger still connected, manually push the caliper pistons back into their bores using a suitable tool. This is necessary as the VCDS procedure only retracts the EPB motor, not the hydraulic pistons. Note: A flashing parking brake light is normal during this service mode. Do not operate the EPB switch until the rear brakes are fully reassembled.

Resetting the Rear Parking Brake with VCDS

Prerequisites: All rear brake components must be correctly installed and torqued to specification. Maintain the battery charger connection as per the repair manual.

VCDS Procedure:

  1. Access Parking Brake Basic Settings: Return to [Select] [53 – Parking Brake] [Basic Settings – 04] in VCDS.
  2. Deactivate Lining Change Mode: Select “End lining change mode” and click [Go!] to initiate the caliper closing sequence.
  3. Confirmation: The VCDS screen will display “Not Running” or “Finished Correctly.” Once either message appears, click [Stop], [Done, Go Back], and finally [Close Controller, Go Back – 06].
  4. Final System Check: Cycle the parking brake ON and OFF using the vehicle’s switch while simultaneously depressing the brake pedal. This action helps calibrate the system.
  5. Fault Code Scan: Before conducting a test drive, perform a final scan for any fault codes using VCDS. Addressing any detected codes is essential for ensuring safe and proper EPB operation.

Following these detailed instructions ensures the safe and effective use of VCDS for releasing and resetting the electronic parking brake during brake maintenance. Remember to consult your vehicle’s specific repair manual for any model-specific instructions or torque specifications. Always prioritize safety and accuracy when working on brake systems.
