VCDS Lite USB Driver: Installation Guide for Windows 98/ME

The process of setting up a “KKL” VAG-COM compatible interface is simple and involves three steps: downloading the necessary software, installing the Vcds Lite Usb Driver, and configuring the VCDS-Lite software. This guide provides a detailed walkthrough for each step, ensuring a smooth installation process.

Downloading the Software

Before connecting the interface to your PC, you need to download both the VCDS Lite USB driver and the VCDS-Lite software. These are available from the following sources:

Save both files in a convenient location on your computer, as you’ll need them for the subsequent installation steps.

Installing the VCDS Lite USB Driver

Crucially, do not connect the USB interface to your computer until after the driver installation.

  1. Locate the downloaded vagusb98.exe file and double-click it to initiate the driver installation.

  2. Click the “Install” button. The program will extract the necessary files to a folder named “VAG USB Drivers” on your desktop. A progress bar will indicate the progress of the extraction.

  3. Once the extraction is complete, connect the USB interface to your computer. Windows should automatically launch the “Add New Hardware Wizard.” Click “Next.”

  4. Choose “Search for the best driver for your device (Recommended)” and click “Next.”

  5. Ensure that only “Specify a location:” is checked. Click “Browse” and navigate to the C:\Windows\Desktop\VAG USB Drivers folder. Click “Next.”

  6. Windows will locate the appropriate driver. Click “Next.”

  7. Windows will install the driver. Click “Finish” once the process is complete.

Occasionally, Windows might repeat the driver installation process for a secondary component. If this occurs, allow the process to finish.

Verifying Driver Installation

To ensure the VCDS Lite USB driver installed correctly, open the Device Manager:

  1. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
  2. Double-click System. (If not visible, click “View all Control Panel options.”)
  3. Select the Device Manager tab.
  4. Expand Ports (COM & LPT).
  5. The interface should be listed as USB Serial Port (COMx). Note the COM port number (x) for the next step.

Installing and Configuring VCDS-Lite

  1. Run the downloaded VCDS-Lite-x.x-Installer.exe file and follow the on-screen instructions.
  2. Launch VCDS-Lite. Click Options.
  3. Under “Select COM Port,” choose the COM port number you noted earlier.
  4. Click Test. If successful, click Save. Your VCDS-Lite software is now ready to use.
