Programming a VCDS Key Remote for VW and Audi

This guide provides step-by-step instructions on how to program a new Vcds Key Remote for your Volkswagen or Audi vehicle. This process utilizes a VCDS (Vag-Com Diagnostic System) interface. Important Note: This procedure focuses on matching radio-frequency remotes, not immobilizer components. Consult your vehicle’s Factory Repair Manual for immobilizer-related procedures. Ross-Tech is not responsible for any damage resulting from these instructions. Proceed at your own risk.

Matching a VCDS Key Remote: Method 1

This method involves using the Adaptation channels within VCDS.

  1. Gather Your Remotes and VCDS: Have all your remotes (old and new) ready. Connect your VCDS interface to your vehicle’s OBD-II port and launch the VCDS software.

  2. Access Central Convenience or Central Locking:

    • Select [46 – Cent. Conv.] or [35 – Cent. Locking] depending on your vehicle. You can find the correct module for your specific car model on the Ross-Tech website.
  3. Adaptation Channel 01 (or 21):

    • Go to [Adaptation – 10].
    • Enter channel “01”. In some Audi models, this might be channel “21”.
    • Click [Read]. The “Stored Value” indicates the number of currently matched remotes.
  4. Enter the New Number of Remotes:

    • In “New Value”, enter the total number of keys you want to program (up to 4), including existing ones.
    • Click [Test] to verify the number in “Test Value”.
    • Click [Save].
  5. Program Each Remote:

    • Press and hold the UNLOCK button on each remote for at least one second. You have 15 seconds to program all remotes. The car may acknowledge each successful programming with flashing lights or a horn beep. Program each remote one at a time.

Matching a VCDS Key Remote: Method 2

If Method 1 doesn’t work, try this alternative procedure using Measuring Blocks.

  1. Ignition ON with Working Key: Insert a working key into the ignition and turn it to the ON position (do not start the engine).

  2. Access Measuring Blocks:

    • Select [46 – Cent. Conv.] or [35 – Cent. Locking].
    • Go to [Meas. Blocks – 08].
    • Enter group “003” (or “007” in some vehicles).
    • Click [Go!]. Field 2 displays the number of matched remotes and their memory positions.
  3. Matching the New Remote:

    • Lock the car using the new, unmatched key in the driver-side door lock.
    • Within 5 seconds, press the UNLOCK button on the new key repeatedly until you reach the next available memory position. (e.g., if Field 2 was “0001”, press twice for position 2). The car might acknowledge each press.
    • Wait 5 seconds and press UNLOCK to unlock the door.
  4. Verify the New Remote:

    • Turn the ignition OFF and remove the old key.
    • Test the LOCK and UNLOCK functions with the new key.
    • Insert the new key in the ignition and turn it ON.
    • Repeat steps 2 and check Field 2 in group “003”. It should now show both the old and new keys in their respective memory positions.

Clearing Existing Remotes with VCDS

If necessary, you can clear all programmed remotes:

  1. Access Adaptation Channel 00:

    • Select [46 – Cent. Conv.] or [35 – Cent. Locking].
    • Go to [Adaptation – 10].
    • Enter channel “00”.
    • Click [Read] and then [Save]. Confirm by clicking [Yes] when prompted.
  2. Reprogram all Remotes: After clearing, no remotes will be matched. You’ll need to use Method 1 or 2 to program all your remotes again. Remember to consult the Ross-Tech Wiki for specific instructions related to your vehicle model.
