This guide provides instructions on how to program new radio-frequency remote keys (key fobs) for various Volkswagen (VW) and Audi vehicles using a VAG-COM or VCDS diagnostic interface. This process utilizes the Ross-Tech VCDS software and does not cover Immobilizer component matching. For Immobilizer related procedures, consult the Ross-Tech Wiki or your vehicle’s Factory Repair Manual. Always refer to your vehicle’s Factory Repair Manual before performing any procedures. Ross-Tech is not responsible for any damage or issues resulting from following these instructions.
Matching Key Fobs with VCDS: Two Primary Methods
There are two main methods for matching key fobs using VCDS, depending on your specific vehicle and control module. Always consult the Ross-Tech Wiki for model-specific instructions.
Method 1: Adaptation Channel Programming
- Gather Your Keys: Collect all key fobs you intend to program, both old and new.
- Ignition On: Insert a working key into the ignition and turn it to the “ON” position without starting the engine.
- Access Central Locking/Convenience Module: Connect your VCDS interface and launch the software.
- Select [46 – Cent. Conv.] or [35 – Cent. Locking] depending on your vehicle. This information can be found on the Ross-Tech Wiki’s Applications page.
- Adaptation: Go to [Adaptation – 10].
- Enter Channel: Enter channel “01” (or “21” for some Audi models). Select [Read] to display the number of currently stored keys.
- Input New Key Count: In “New Value,” enter the total number of keys you want to program (up to 4, including existing keys). Select [Test] to verify the number.
- Save and Program: Select [Save]. Within 15 seconds, press and hold the UNLOCK button on each key fob for at least one second, one at a time. The car may acknowledge each successful programming with flashing lights or a horn beep.
Method 2: Measuring Block Programming (If Adaptation Fails)
If Method 1 doesn’t work, try this alternative:
- Ignition On: Insert a working key and turn the ignition to “ON” without starting the engine.
- Access Module and Measuring Blocks: Select [46 – Cent. Conv.] or [35 – Cent. Locking], then go to [Meas. Blocks – 08].
- Enter Group: Enter group “003” (or “007” for some vehicles). Select [Go!]. Field 2 will display the number and memory positions of currently matched keys. “0001” indicates one key in position 1.
- Lock with New Key: Lock the car from the outside using the driver-side door lock and the new, unprogrammed key. You may need to hold the key in the unlock position for the next step.
- Program New Key: Within 5 seconds, press the UNLOCK button on the new key enough times to reach the next available memory position. If “0001” was displayed in Field 2, press the unlock button twice to program the new key to position 2. The car may acknowledge this action.
- Unlock and Verify: Wait 5 seconds, then press the unlock button on the new key to unlock the door. Turn the ignition off and remove the old key. Test the new key by locking and unlocking the car.
- Confirm Programming: Insert the new key in the ignition, turn it to “ON,” and check Measuring Block group “003” again. Field 2 should now reflect the newly programmed key. Example: “0011” indicates keys in positions 1 and 2.
Clearing Existing Keys
If necessary, you can clear all programmed remotes:
- Access Adaptation: Go to [46 – Cent. Conv.] or [35 – Cent. Locking], then select [Adaptation – 10].
- Clear Channel 00: Enter channel “00”, select [Read], then [Save] with a value of “0.” Confirm the action when prompted. This will erase all programmed key fobs, requiring you to reprogram all keys using one of the methods above.
