This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the correct USB drivers for your Ross-Tech VCDS interface on a Windows 7 computer. Proper driver installation is crucial for VCDS to communicate with your vehicle’s onboard diagnostics system.
Download and Install VCDS Software
First, download the latest version of the VCDS software from the official Ross-Tech website. During installation, avoid installing VCDS in the Program Files
directory. For optimal compatibility, install it in a custom location like C:Ross-TechVCDS
.
Connect the Interface and Initiate Driver Installation
Connect your Ross-Tech USB interface to an available USB port on your Windows 7 computer. The “Found New Hardware” wizard should automatically launch, displaying a window similar to this:
Select “Locate and install driver software (recommended)“. In the subsequent window:
Choose “Don’t search online” to proceed with manual driver installation. The next dialog box will identify the detected interface:
Locate and Install the Drivers Manually
Select “I don’t have the disc. Show me other options.” Then, click “Browse my computer for driver software (advanced).” This will open a file browser window:
Navigate to the folder containing the VCDS drivers (typically located within the VCDS installation directory). You can either type the path directly or use the “Browse” button:
Once you’ve selected the correct folder, click “OK”. Windows will then locate and install the appropriate driver. You might encounter a security warning like this:
This warning appears because the drivers are not WHQL (Windows Hardware Quality Labs) certified by Microsoft. Click “Install this driver software anyway” to continue. A confirmation window will appear upon successful installation:
Click “Close” to complete the driver installation process.
Test the Installation
Launch the VCDS software. Click “Options,” select the correct USB port, and then click “Test.” A successful test will display information about your interface, similar to this:
If the test is successful, your VCDS interface is ready to use. You can now connect it to your vehicle and begin diagnosing. If the test fails, review the previous steps to ensure the drivers were installed correctly. Consult the Ross-Tech website for further troubleshooting assistance.
