Several factors can trigger a P0012 code. One common cause is low engine oil levels or dirty oil, which can hinder the proper functioning of the variable valve timing system. A faulty camshaft position sensor, crankshaft position sensor, or wiring issues within these circuits can also contribute to this problem.
