For iPhones running iOS 10 or later, the “TopGuru” app is necessary, a detail we discovered through their responsive support center (both US and China based centers replied promptly).

App installation and communication with the TopDon scanner are generally quick and efficient. A diagnostic trouble code (DTC) scan successfully identified a parking sensor issue, a fault also detected by only two other scanners in this test (OBDeleven and vLinker MC+). Vehicle identification was unsuccessful in our testing, necessitating manual vehicle selection starting with the manufacturer. The “Hot Functions” menu, offering features like oil service and battery reset, is a valuable addition. Once installed, connecting is a simple matter of starting the car, plugging in the device, launching the app, and waiting for the connection. While connection took a couple of attempts in our testing, it was generally rapid. The app’s straightforward menu system contributes to its ease of use and fast operation.

While the diagnostic response is quick, the OBDLink CX surprisingly missed an existing parking sensor fault in our test vehicle. However, its dashboard feature provides valuable real-time readings for parameters like engine RPM, speed, MAF pressure, battery voltage, and fuel level. This can be combined with freeze-frame data when a fault is logged. The app also offers trip logging, calculating fuel consumption and mileage, and the ability to display live data as graphs, adding to its versatility and fast data access.

While OBDLink offers more feature-rich and expensive scanners, the CX version serves as a valuable and affordable entry point into car diagnostics, providing fast and essential functionality for most users.

There’s no single “best” choice; the ideal scanner depends on your specific needs and priorities. Start by defining your intended use. For basic EML diagnosis, all tested scanners will suffice, offering fast fault code reading and clearing capabilities. However, some scanners provide in-depth diagnostics for specific car brands, a valuable feature if your vehicle is among those supported. For example, BMW owners might consider scanners compatible with the BimmerCode app for enhanced functionality and fast access to brand-specific data.

It’s crucial to verify scanner compatibility with your car. Newer vehicles (2017 onwards) often utilize a CAN-Bus (Controller Area Network) system for ECU communication, an OBDII protocol supported by some but not all scanners.
