MK5 Full Circle Mod: No VCDS Required – Skyline Tail Light Upgrade

This guide provides a comprehensive walkthrough for achieving the popular “full circle” tail light modification on a MK5, similar to the Nissan Skyline, without needing VCDS. This mod enhances the rear aesthetics by illuminating the inner circles of the tail lights. We’ll cover the necessary tools, materials, and a step-by-step installation process.

Tools and Materials

Before starting, gather the following:

  • Soldering iron and solder
  • Wire
  • 10mm wrench
  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Drill bit (sized for a wedge bulb)
  • Heat shrink tubing
  • Electrical tape
  • Wedge bulbs (4)
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Wire strippers

Installation Steps

Tail Light Removal

  1. Begin by removing the tail light assembly. This requires removing the boot lid trim. Consult your vehicle’s manual or online resources for specific instructions on trim removal. Once the trim is off, unplug the reverse light bulbs and remove the two 10mm nuts securing the tail lights. Carefully pull the tail light assembly out.

Preparing the Housing

  1. Separate the bulb housing from the tail light lens. This involves removing the three Phillips head screws holding the silver reflector in place.

  2. Carefully mark the desired location for the new bulb holes on the reflector. Use a ruler to ensure symmetry between the two tail lights. Aligning the new holes with the existing outer tail light lines is recommended.

  3. Drill the marked locations using the appropriately sized drill bit. To prevent plastic debris from falling inside the light, have someone hold the tail light from underneath while drilling.

Wiring the Bulbs

  1. If enabling dual reverse lights, remove the red plastic from the right inner tail light. Trim the bulb holder as needed to accommodate the new bulbs.

  2. Prepare the wedge bulbs. Bend the wires upward and thread them through the drilled holes. Solder the wires to extend their length, and use heat shrink tubing or electrical tape to insulate the connections.

  3. Insert the bulbs into the drilled holes. The fit should be snug. Avoid using silicone adhesive, as it can complicate future bulb replacements.

  4. Combine the wires from both inner circle bulbs and secure them with electrical tape.

Connecting to Power Source

  1. Run the wires from the inner circle bulbs down the side of the hatch and through the existing rubber grommets into the vehicle’s interior.

  2. Locate the wire supplying power to the tail light’s running lights (not the brake lights). Tap into this wire for the positive connection to the inner circle bulbs. For dual reverse lights, tap into both the reverse light and rear fog light power supply wires.

Grounding

  1. Find a suitable grounding point near the tail lights and connect the ground wire.

Final Result

This modification provides a unique and stylish upgrade to your MK5’s tail lights, mimicking the iconic Skyline look. Enjoy your upgraded rear end!
