MBZ OBDII Reset: Drive Cycle Procedure

A specific drive cycle is often required to reset the On-Board Diagnostics (OBDII) system in your Mercedes-Benz (MBZ) vehicle after repairs or battery disconnection. This process allows the vehicle’s computer to re-evaluate emission-related components and ensure they are functioning correctly. Below is a detailed highway drive cycle procedure to help facilitate an Mbz Obdii Reset.

MBZ Highway Drive Cycle for OBDII Reset

This procedure should be performed with a cold engine.

Phase 1: Initial Warm-up and Acceleration

  1. Idle: Let the engine idle for 20 seconds.
  2. Gradual Acceleration: Gently accelerate and drive at 20-25 mph for 1 minute, varying speed slightly.

Phase 2: Moderate Speed and Deceleration

  1. Steady Driving: Drive at 25-31 mph for 35 seconds.
  2. Deceleration and Idle: Decelerate to 0 mph within 10 seconds. Idle for 40 seconds.

Phase 3: Increased Speed and Extended Driving

  1. Moderate Acceleration: Accelerate moderately and drive at 20-25 mph for 20 seconds.
  2. Higher Speed Driving: Increase speed to 40-55 mph and maintain for 85 seconds.
  3. Extended Deceleration: Decelerate to 0 mph within 50 seconds. Idle for 15 seconds.

Phase 4: Rapid Acceleration and Deceleration

  1. Quick Acceleration: Accelerate to 36 mph in 35 seconds.
  2. Rapid Deceleration: Decelerate to 0 mph in 15 seconds. Idle for 10 seconds.

Phase 5: Varied Acceleration and Deceleration

  1. Controlled Acceleration/Deceleration: Accelerate to 30 mph and decelerate to 0 mph over a 25-second period. Idle for 20 seconds.
  2. Specific Acceleration and Steady Driving: Accelerate to 36 mph in 20 seconds. Drive at 35 mph for 20 seconds. Decelerate to 0 mph in 15 seconds. Idle for 5 seconds.

Phase 6: Gradual and Rapid Deceleration

  1. Gradual Deceleration: Accelerate to 26 mph and decelerate to 0 mph in 40 seconds. Idle for 15 seconds.
  2. Rapid Deceleration: Accelerate to 27 mph in 40 seconds. Decelerate to 0 mph in 8 seconds. Idle for 25 seconds.
  3. Moderate Deceleration: Accelerate to 26 mph and decelerate to 0 mph in 35 seconds. Idle for 15 seconds.

Phase 7: Stop-and-Go Simulation

  1. Stop-and-Go Driving: Drive in stop-and-go traffic for 1 minute, reaching 25-30 mph at least twice without coming to a complete stop.

Phase 8: Varied Speed and Extended Driving

  1. Varied Speed Driving: Drive at 20-30 mph for 2 minutes, varying speed, then stop.
  2. Extended Varied Speed Driving: Drive at 20-28 mph for 2.5 minutes at varying speeds, then stop. Idle for 30 seconds.

Phase 9: Final Acceleration and Deceleration Patterns

  1. Specific Acceleration/Deceleration Pattern: Accelerate to 28 mph and back to 0 mph in 50 seconds. Accelerate to 20 mph in 10 seconds. Drive at 20-27 mph for 20 seconds, then decelerate to 0 mph in 10 seconds. Idle for 15 seconds.
  2. Short Acceleration/Deceleration Bursts: Accelerate to 23 mph and back to 0 mph in 20 seconds. Idle for 10 seconds. Accelerate to 22 mph and back to 0 mph in 45 seconds. Idle for 10 seconds.
  3. Final Driving Sequence: Accelerate to 25 mph in 30 seconds. Drive at 23-28 mph for 25 seconds. Decelerate to 0 mph in less than 10 seconds.
  4. Final Idle: Idle for 25 seconds. Accelerate to 22 mph and back to 0 mph in 30 seconds.

Important Note: This entire drive cycle must be completed twice. Successful completion should set all monitors to “READY.” If not, a 15-step city drive cycle may be necessary. Consult your vehicle’s owner’s manual or a qualified technician for further assistance.
