How to Clear Codes with VCDS on Jetta

Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) on a Volkswagen Jetta using VCDS (Vag-Com Diagnostic System) is a straightforward process. After performing an Auto-Scan and identifying the issues, you can clear the codes either within a specific module or globally. To clear codes within a specific module, navigate to the module containing the DTC and select the “Clear Codes” option. For a global clear, perform an Auto-Scan and then choose “Clear All DTCs.” This action will erase codes across all modules with stored DTCs.

Clearing codes doesn’t automatically reset readiness monitors or trim values unless the engine module itself has DTCs. Clearing codes within the engine module, regardless of whether DTCs are present, will reset both readiness and trim. Be mindful of local regulations concerning emissions inspections as some jurisdictions permit a certain number of unset readiness monitors.

Deciding when to clear codes depends on the specific codes and the task at hand. For instance, with an airbag light, it’s crucial to diagnose the code before clearing it to prevent accidental deployment due to a short circuit. Similarly, for certain ABS issues on specific Jetta models and modules (e.g., MK60EC1), clearing codes without careful consideration might hinder warranty claims or recalls. Always prioritize understanding the code’s meaning before clearing it, especially for critical safety systems. In cases like airbag faults or potential recalls, consult the fault code definitions and relevant technical service bulletins (TSBs) before proceeding with clearing the DTCs.

After clearing the codes, cycle the ignition key, take the car for a drive, and then re-scan for any recurring DTCs. This procedure helps confirm whether the issue has been resolved or if further diagnosis is required. Actuating various components, like door controls, before the re-scan can help reveal intermittent faults. Remember to consult reputable sources like Ross-Tech’s VCDS documentation and online forums for detailed instructions and specific information related to your Jetta’s model year and installed modules.
