Hex Can VCDS Aliexpress: Genuine vs. Clone Comparison

This article explores two different HEX CAN VCDS cables purchased from Aliexpress, comparing their functionality to a genuine Ross-Tech cable. We’ll delve into the chipsets used, performance differences, and potential risks associated with using clone cables.

Atmega162 Based HEX CAN Cable (Aliexpress)

The first cable utilizes the Atmega162 microcontroller, the same chip found in genuine Ross-Tech HEX-CAN interfaces. However, this Aliexpress version requires a custom loader software flagged as malicious by VirusTotal. Priced at $29, this cable functioned as a standard HEX-CAN interface, offering no advantages over an existing genuine HEX-CAN cable.

Due to the security risk associated with the loader software, this cable is not recommended. Using it in a virtual machine might mitigate the risk, but its functionality mirrors an older HEX-CAN, making it redundant for those already owning one.

STM32F405 Based VCDS Cable (Aliexpress)

The second cable, priced at $49, uses the STM32F405 microcontroller, similar to genuine VCDS interfaces. Surprisingly, it didn’t require a loader or modification to the VCDS software. It functioned flawlessly with internet access, despite instructions advising against it. Performance exceeded the genuine HEX-CAN, boasting faster logging speeds and quicker vehicle communication.

Further investigation revealed the chip was locked with Read Protection Level 2 (RDP2). Using a ChipWhisperer, RDP2 was bypassed, granting debug access and RAM dumping capabilities. However, RDP1 remained active, requiring glitching techniques for memory access.

Conclusion

While the STM32F405 based cable from Aliexpress offered surprisingly good performance, using clone VCDS cables carries inherent risks. Compatibility with future VCDS updates is uncertain, and potential firmware updates might be impossible. Genuine Ross-Tech cables remain the recommended choice for guaranteed functionality, reliability, and support. However, for budget-conscious users needing basic functionality, the Aliexpress STM32F405 cable might suffice, understanding its limitations.
