Autel X Star Sale: Considering Repair Costs Before You Buy

The high cost of repairs for Autel drones, specifically the X Star, can be a significant factor for prospective buyers. While some deals may offer free shipping both ways for repairs, the price of replacement parts and the company’s policies regarding repairs can be deterrents.

One user reported a crash incident where their Autel drone malfunctioned and flew directly into the ground. Instead of acknowledging a potential product defect, the company placed the blame on the user. Furthermore, Autel insists on handling all repairs in-house, charging high prices for parts, especially for older models. The company’s refusal to sell individual components like camera parts, opting only for full assembly replacements, further adds to the expense.

In contrast, comparable drone models from other manufacturers, like DJI, offer readily available and significantly cheaper replacement parts. For example, a new 4K camera gimbal assembly for a DJI Phantom 3 can be found for around $199 on eBay. Even entire motherboard and motor replacements for older DJI models are available for under $150.

This disparity in repair costs and part availability raises concerns about Autel’s long-term viability in the consumer drone market. Their limited drone model selection and questionable customer service, coupled with expensive repairs, may deter potential buyers. Before committing to an Autel X Star, especially during a sale, consider the potential long-term costs associated with repairs and part replacements. Weigh these expenses against the initial purchase price and compare them with the repair options and costs of competitor drone models. A seemingly good deal on an Autel X Star Sale might not be so advantageous in the long run if repair costs are significantly higher than alternatives.
