Choosing the right EV charger for your home can be a daunting task. After researching several options, including the ChargePoint Home Flex, I opted for the Autel Maxicharger Ac Lite Home 50a Ev Charger with a separate holster. Concerns about long-term reliability due to potential overheating issues with the ChargePoint unit led me to choose the Autel. This review details my installation experience and initial impressions of the Autel MaxiCharger AC Lite.
Why the Autel MaxiCharger AC Lite?
My primary motivation for selecting the Autel MaxiCharger was its robust design. A YouTube review showcasing the internal components revealed ample space for heat dissipation, addressing my concerns about the longevity of the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth components. While my current vehicle, a BMW X5 45e (currently in transit from factory to dealership), only supports Level-2 charging at 16 amps, the Autel’s 50-amp capacity offers future-proofing for a potential upgrade to a fully electric vehicle.
Installation Process
I opted for a hardwired installation for a cleaner aesthetic and to maximize the 50-amp charging capacity. The installation itself was straightforward, with the most challenging aspect being running the thick 6 AWG wire through the wall. I installed a 50-amp breaker and adjusted the internal dial on the Autel unit to 4, limiting the output to 40 amps. It’s important to remember that the vehicle’s internal circuitry ultimately dictates the maximum charging current, which is 16 amps in the case of my BMW. Should I need the full 50-amp capacity in the future, I’ll need to upgrade the breaker accordingly.
Separate Holster: A Design Advantage
Choosing the version with a separate holster provides the flexibility to pivot the charging gun downwards, preventing it from protruding at a 90-degree angle. This feature is particularly beneficial in space-constrained areas like single-car garages. While the ChargePoint Home Flex offers a similar pivoting holster integrated into the unit, Autel’s separate holster design was a key factor in my decision. Hopefully, Autel will consider incorporating a pivoting mechanism into their integrated holster models in the future.
Initial Impressions and Future Expectations
Although I haven’t yet charged my vehicle, the Autel MaxiCharger AC Lite appears to be a well-built and thoughtfully designed unit. Initial power-on tests were successful. Ordering directly from the Autel website ensured timely delivery and avoided sales tax, adding further value to the purchase. I am confident that this charger will meet my current and future EV charging needs. I look forward to putting it through its paces once my BMW X5 45e arrives.
