Autel MaxiCharger AC Elite Home: A Future-Proof EV Charging Solution

After researching various EVSE chargers, the Autel Maxicharger Ac Elite Home with separate holster was chosen for its 50-amp hardwired capacity and potential for longevity. Concerns about Wi-Fi and Bluetooth component failures in compact chargers due to heat dissipation led to the decision against alternatives like the CP Home Flex. The Autel’s internal design, as showcased in online reviews, appears to provide ample space for heat management.

This Autel Maxicharger AC Elite Home is intended to charge a BMW X5 45e, currently in transit from factory to dealership. While the vehicle’s current maximum charging capacity is Level-2 16 amps, the 50-amp charger offers future-proofing for a potential upgrade to a fully electric vehicle. The self-installation process was straightforward, with the most challenging aspect being running the 6 AWG wire. A 50-amp breaker was installed and the internal dial adjusted to 4, delivering 40 amps to the charging port. Ultimately, the car’s internal circuitry limits the maximum current to 16 amps.

The hardwired option provides a cleaner aesthetic and allows for the maximum 50-amp rating. To fully utilize the 50-amp capacity, a higher-rated breaker will be necessary. The separate holster design was preferred for its ability to pivot the charging gun downward, unlike the fixed 90-degree angle of the integrated holster on other Autel units. This pivoting feature, also present in the CP Home Flex, is ideal for space-constrained areas like single-car garages. A recommendation for Autel would be to incorporate a pivoting holster into their integrated units for improved usability.

Initial power-on tests of the Autel Maxicharger AC Elite Home were successful. Full functionality testing awaits the vehicle’s delivery. The unit was purchased directly from the manufacturer’s website, ensuring timely delivery and avoiding sales tax.
