Autel Drones 2019: Understanding EU Drone Regulations and C2 Certification

The European Union introduced new drone regulations (EU 2019/945) impacting how drones are operated. Autel Robotics, a leading drone manufacturer, has been working diligently to ensure its drones comply with these regulations. One key aspect of compliance is the C2 certification, which allows for broader operational capabilities. This article discusses the importance of C2 certification for Autel drones, specifically referencing the EVO Max series as a 2019 model that has received this important designation.

C2 Certification for Autel EVO Max Series

Autel Robotics achieved a significant milestone by securing the C2 certification for its EVO Max series. This certification demonstrates Autel’s commitment to adhering to EU drone regulations and enables EVO Max users to operate their drones in the ‘Open Category’ A2 sub-category after completing the required A2 Certificate of Competency (A2 CofC) online training, available through your National Aviation Authority. Operation in the A3 sub-category is also allowed.

To achieve C2 certification, Autel Robotics collaborated with Applus, an authorized EASA Notified Body. Applus rigorously tested the EVO Max series to ensure compliance with all C2 requirements before EASA granted the Class Mark. This certification can be verified on the Applus website. https://apps.applus.com/microsites/fecip/list?name=&number=0370-UAS-0008

Obtaining the C2 Label for Your Autel EVO Max

Autel EVO Max owners need to take specific steps to obtain the C2 Class Identification Label for their drones:

  1. Firmware Update: Update your aircraft to the latest firmware version (V1.7.0.123 or later) to ensure compatibility with C2 requirements. Firmware updates and release notes can be found on the Autel Robotics website: https://www.autelrobotics.com/doc/release-notes-02-02-2024/

  2. LED Indicator Check: After powering on the aircraft, check the color of the LED indicator light located on the front arms. This will help verify the firmware update and C2 compatibility.

  3. Application Process: Visit the Autel Robotics support page (Support-Autel Robotics) and provide the following information:

    • Aircraft serial number (found in the RC under More – Settings – More – About)
    • Picture of the LED indicator light
    • Your shipping information
  4. Label Delivery: Autel support will verify your information and send you the C2 label.

Autel’s Commitment to EU Drone Regulations

The C2 certification for the EVO Max series reflects Autel Robotics’ dedication to providing drone users with safe and compliant technology. Autel continues to work closely with EASA and its Notified Bodies to secure further certifications for its drone models, ensuring that Autel drones remain at the forefront of technological advancement while adhering to evolving industry standards. By staying informed about EU drone regulations and obtaining the necessary certifications, Autel drone operators can enjoy the full potential of their drones while operating safely and legally.
