06 Sentra Replace Key and Reprogram with Autel

Replacing a lost or damaged key for your 2006 Nissan Sentra requires programming the new key to your car’s immobilizer system. An Autel diagnostic tool can simplify this process. This guide outlines the key programming procedure for a 2006 Nissan Sentra.

Key Programming Procedure for 2006 Nissan Sentra

The following steps outline how to program new keys for a 2006 Nissan Sentra after they have been replaced:

  1. Initiate Programming Mode: Briefly insert any key into the ignition cylinder and remove it immediately. The security light on the dashboard should illuminate and stay on. This indicates that the car’s ECU has entered auto-programming mode.

  2. Program the First Key: Insert the first new transponder key into the ignition cylinder. Do not turn the ignition on. The security light might blink, signaling that the key has been accepted. After 3-5 seconds, remove the key. The security light should remain illuminated, confirming you are still in programming mode.

  3. Program the Second Key: Repeat the process from step 2 with the second new transponder key. Insert the key, wait 3-5 seconds, and remove it. The security light should stay on.

  4. Program the Third Key (Valet Key): Insert the third transponder key (if applicable) and wait for the security light to turn off. Once off, remove the key. The security light should then begin to blink regularly. This third key will function as a valet key.

  5. Complete Programming: Wait approximately 30 seconds for the programming cycle and programming mode to finish. This allows the ECU to save the new key information.

Master vs. Valet Keys

The first two keys programmed are designated as master keys, granting full access to all vehicle functions. The third key, if programmed, is designated as a valet key, which typically restricts access to the glove box and trunk.

Verifying Key Programming

You can verify successful key programming by observing the security light:

  • Master Key: Inserting a correctly programmed master key will cause the security light to stop blinking immediately.
  • Valet Key: When a correctly programmed valet key is inserted, the security light will stay on for about two seconds before turning off.
  • Unprogrammed Key: If the security light continues to blink after inserting a key, it indicates that the key has not been programmed to the vehicle. If this occurs repeat the programming process.
