OBDII Connector and Protocols for a 2002 Nissan Sunny

All cars and light trucks sold in the US after 1996 must be OBD-II compliant. However, the European Union’s OBD regulations are more complex. Determining compatibility for a 2002 Nissan Sunny, often referred to as an “Astra Obdii 2002 Sunny” in online searches, requires understanding OBD-II protocols and diagnostic link connectors (DLCs).

OBD-II compliant vehicles use one of five communication protocols: J1850 PWM, J1850 VPW, ISO9141-2, ISO14230-4 (Keyword Protocol 2000), and ISO15765-4/SAE J2480 (CAN). While US manufacturers couldn’t use CAN until 2003, all vehicles from 2008 onward utilize it. A 2002 model is likely to use one of the earlier protocols.

Identifying the OBDII Protocol in Your Astra OBDII 2002 Sunny

There are two DLC types defined by SAE J1962: Type A and Type B. They differ primarily in the alignment tab’s shape. J1962 specifies both types should be easily accessible within the driver’s compartment.

You can usually determine your vehicle’s protocol by examining the DLC pinout:

This table outlines how to identify the protocol:

Pin 2 Pin 6 Pin 7 Pin 10 Pin 14 Pin 15 Standard
must have must have J1850 PWM
must have J1850 VPW
must have may have* ISO9141/14230
must have must have ISO15765 (CAN)

*Pin 15 (“L-line”) is optional in newer vehicles using ISO9141-2 or ISO14230-4.

Besides pins 2, 7, 10, and 15, the connector should have pins 4 (Chassis Ground), 5 (Signal Ground), and 16 (Battery Positive). This further clarifies protocol identification:

PWM: Connector must have pins 2, 4, 5, 10, and 16.

VPW: Connector must have pins 2, 4, 5, and 16, but not pin 10.

ISO: Connector must have pins 4, 5, 7, and 16. Pin 15 may be present.

CAN: Connector must have pins 4, 5, 6, 14, and 16. This is less likely for a 2002 Sunny.

Locating the DLC and checking these pins will help you determine the OBD-II protocol for your astra obdii 2002 sunny. This information is crucial for selecting compatible diagnostic tools and software. For further information, consult resources detailing OBD-II protocols by manufacturer.
