AEM OBDII Solution for Pre-CAN Vehicles (1996-2007)

The AEM 30-0334 wideband, renowned for its OBDII compatibility, was initially a forum-driven project. It involved reprogramming the AEM 30-0300 wideband’s CAN interface to adhere to OBDII standards, enabling direct connection with HPTuners MPVI/MPVI2 scanners via an OBDII pass-thru cable. This breakthrough simplified data logging for tuning enthusiasts.

However, a limitation existed. The 30-0300, primarily designed for AEMNet protocol via its CAN interface, lacked the necessary hardware to communicate with vehicles using non-CAN based ECUs—a characteristic of most pre-2007 vehicles. This presented challenges for tuning 1996-2007 OBDII vehicles relying on J1850 (VPW and PWM) interfaces. Workarounds included using the Pro version with ProLink CAN, serial data, or analog wiring techniques, each with its own drawbacks, especially when logging dual-channel widebands.

To address this, a J1850-enabled OBDII adapter for AEM 30-0300 and 30-0310 widebands is being developed. This adapter would replace the pass-thru cable used by the 30-0334, featuring screw terminals for connecting the wideband’s CANH and CANL wires, enabling multiple wideband logging. A potential cold-start safety feature is also being considered to prevent thermal shock to the sensor elements by delaying heating until after engine start.

This new hardware aims to provide a seamless Aem Obdii solution for pre-CAN vehicles. Estimated pricing, influenced by current chip market conditions, is projected between $70 and $80, offsetting the price difference between the 30-0334 and the 30-0300/0310. This adapter offers a cost-effective way to achieve direct OBDII connectivity for AEM widebands in older vehicles. Development and debugging are underway, with production timelines dependent on demand. This innovative solution promises to simplify wideband data logging for a wider range of vehicles.
