In the world of Freemasonry, the “Autel Des Serments” or Altar of Oaths holds a place of immense importance. This article will explore the meaning, function, and symbolic significance of the Autel des Serments, providing a comprehensive understanding of its role within the Masonic Lodge. At CARDIAGTECH.NET, we understand the importance of tradition and symbolism in Freemasonry, and we aim to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the Autel des Serments. Discover the secrets of Masonic tools and their profound symbolism.
1. Defining the Autel Des Serments
Traditionally located in front of the Mosaic Pavement, near the three steps leading to the East, the Autel des Serments aligns with the Worshipful Master’s position. While ancient customs placed it on the Worshipful Master’s platform, it’s often situated on a small piece of furniture adjacent to it, above or below the three steps that delineate the Lodge’s East. Occasionally, it stands at the center of the Lodge’s Long Square. This elevated platform serves to gather symbolic elements.
In many Lodges, it is usually a cubic piece of furniture, but in some cases, it is a large rough stone on which what we call “the Three Great Lights of Freemasonry” can be placed.
1.1. Symbolic Representation of the Autel
The Autel des Serments, or Altar of Oaths, is the central focal point in a Masonic Lodge, symbolizing moral guidance and spiritual truth, where members take their solemn oaths, and it’s essential to understand its meaning.
1.2. Significance of the Autel’s Location
The positioning of the Autel des Serments in front of the Mosaic Pavement, near the three steps leading to the East, and in alignment with the Worshipful Master signifies the path of moral and spiritual ascent that Freemasons undertake. The Mosaic Pavement symbolizes the duality of human existence, with its alternating black and white squares representing the contrasts of life, such as good and evil, joy and sorrow. The three steps leading to the East represent the progressive stages of Masonic initiation and the journey towards enlightenment.
1.3. Different Forms of the Autel
The Autel des Serments can take different forms in various Masonic Lodges. In many Lodges, it is a cubic piece of furniture, symbolizing stability, balance, and the solid foundation upon which moral and spiritual truths are built. In some cases, the Autel des Serments may be a large rough stone, reminiscent of the rough ashlar that represents the unrefined state of a Freemason’s character before initiation.
2. The Elements Found on the Autel Des Serments
For the proper execution of each meeting, the Architect Brother places the closed Volume of Sacred Law on the Altar. In the Modern Rite, he adds a compass, also closed, as well as a square. According to the rite practiced, other objects must sometimes be placed on the Altar. Thus, in the Rectified Scottish Rite, a small Sword and a Trowel are also placed in addition to the Three Great Lights.
2.1. The Three Great Lights of Freemasonry
The Three Great Lights of Freemasonry symbolically form a whole. We can deduce the intention of the Masons not to accept the content of the sacred book in its literal sense, but to interpret it by means of the symbolism of the Compass and the Square.
2.1.1. The Volume of Sacred Law
For some Masons, the Volume of Sacred Law is only a symbol and, as such, is susceptible to personal interpretation. But the presence of the Bible on the Altar is a Landmark contested by some non-regular Lodges. That is why, as early as 1929, the United Grand Lodge of England – which is the heir to the first Grand Lodge of London and, as such, the guarantor of the archetype of speculative Freemasonry – published the eight fundamental principles for the recognition of Grand Lodges.
Without necessarily reminding you of all of them, I will simply tell you that at point 3 of these Landmarks, it is specified that the Initiates must take their obligation on the Book of Sacred Law, or with their eyes fixed on this open Book, by which is expressed the revelation from above by which the conscience of the individual being initiated is irrevocably bound.
2.1.2. The Square and Compasses
The Volume of Sacred Law is not alone on the Altar. It is covered with the Square and Compass. The presence of these two tools – which become symbols once the Works are opened – has no blasphemous connotation. We are in the presence of a universal symbolic model. In this model, the Square represents the material part of the Cosmos, that is to say for us the Earth. The Compass represents the Sky or the Heavens. The Square is therefore the emblem of man and the Compass that of the Great Architect of the Universe.
2.2. Other Objects Placed on the Autel
Depending on the rite practiced, other objects may be placed on the Autel des Serments in addition to the Three Great Lights of Freemasonry. For example, in the Rectified Scottish Rite, a small Sword and a Trowel are also placed on the Altar.
2.2.1. The Sword
The Sword symbolizes courage, honor, and justice. Its presence on the Autel des Serments reminds Freemasons of the importance of upholding these virtues in their lives and defending the principles of Freemasonry.
2.2.2. The Trowel
The Trowel is an emblem of brotherly love and affection. It symbolizes the act of spreading the cement of brotherly love, which unites Freemasons into a harmonious and cohesive body.
2.3. Symbolic Interpretation of the Objects
These Three Great Lights of Freemasonry constitute a ternary symbolic model. But the Square and the Compass, a binary model, are juxtaposed, to illuminate the scope, with the Volume of Sacred Law which, in the eyes of some other Masons, is much more than a symbol. For Guy Boisdenghien in particular, the Volume of Sacred Law contains passages attributed to “a-human revelations.”
Point 6 of the Landmarks also specifies that the Three Great Lights of Freemasonry will always be exhibited during the Works of the Grand Lodge or the Lodges under its control. The main of these Lights is the Book (or Volume) of Sacred Law, a concept that I will now try to explain.
3. The Significance of the Oath
During the Initiation ceremony, immediately after the “journeys,” the Impetrant takes his oath on the three Great Lights of Freemasonry. The ritual specifies that it is the Volume of Sacred Law, the Compass and the Square.
3.1. The Volume of Sacred Law as the Bible
In some obediences or at certain rites, the candidate is told that this Volume of Sacred Law is the Bible. In reality, this Volume is always the Bible, open to the Prologue of the Gospel of John. To act otherwise would be to empty the rite of its meaning.
But this book may represent nothing to the candidate. For this oath to have value, it must be taken on a book representing moral law or Tradition.
3.2. The Importance of Moral Law and Tradition
In accordance with Article 3 of the Constitution of our Obedience, the G.L.R.B., all solemn promises and commitments must be taken by placing the right hand on the Three Great Lights of Freemasonry, namely the Volume of Sacred Law, preferably open to the Gospel according to St. John, under the Square and Compass. The sacred book required by a candidate’s religion may, at his request, be added to the altar for the same use.
The Lodge can therefore, during the time of the Oath, add to the Bible another work, in prior consultation with the candidate for whom it will have this value: the Koran, the Torah, the Vedas (Hinduism), the Tripitaka (Buddhism), the Tao te King (Taoism), the four books of doctrine (Confucianism), the Zend-Avesta (Zoroastrianism).
Article 32.1 of our General Regulations concerns all solemn promises and commitments, for example: initiations to the three degrees but also the oath of the Worshipful Master during his solemn Installation.
3.3. Accommodating Different Beliefs
Article 32.2 specifies that a Lodge may, at the request of a single Brother or of several members of the Lodge or even of a visiting Brother, decide to place on the altar – next to the Bible, opened under the Square and Compass – other “Volumes of Sacred Law.” The Grand Committee gives an opinion on the Volumes that can be taken into account.
This article 32.2 concerns only all other occasions when there is no question of promises or solemn commitments.
3.4. The Gospel of John in European Tradition
Regarding the opening of the book of sacred law in our European tradition, we open and close the Works with the Gospel of Saint John from which the True Light comes. It is therefore the Bible that must be opened. There is no imperative reason for the other books to be opened.
Let us also specify that the Bible can have a religious character for the candidate, as well as for certain members of the Lodge. But, in its role as Volume of Sacred Law, it is not. The Three Great Lights of Freemasonry have no religious character. The rites practiced at the Regular Grand Lodge of Belgium are open to men of all faiths.
4. Considerations on the Bible or Volume of Sacred Law
The Bible, as an “object – book” has no sacred character. A book cannot obviously be sacred. On the other hand, part of its content is based on Tradition because, to use the expression of Guy Boisdenghien, it expresses “an a-human revelation”; the best known example being the Ten Commandments that Yahweh dictated to Moses on Mount Sinai.
4.1. Different Perspectives on Reading the Bible
We do not read the Bible uniformly but according to four optics: literal, historical, moral and esoteric. Referring to the letter of the biblical writings is no longer valid in our time. Moreover, the historicity of the stories has not been taken into account since the last century. Moreover, any text that claims to be a teaching of a tradition or a revelation has only secondary and even insignificant relationships with reality and historical chronology. Moral readings and an esoteric approach remain. At these levels, the Book is no longer the property of the chosen people in its Old Testament part nor that of the Christians in its New Testament part. Thus, Gnostics, Deists, Agnostics and even atheists can glean reflections on Moral Law or their personal, spiritual or non-spiritual introspection.
4.2. The Message of Love and Unity
Should we necessarily recall that the Gospels and especially the one attributed to John contain this remarkable message to all humanity: “love one another.”
For many regular Masons, that is, those who remember that our traditional and universal Freemasonry is Christian, the Volume of Sacred Law represents the book of the creative Word, manifested in the aspect of revelation. The Tradition revealed by the Volume of Sacred Law, in its esoteric sense is a source of Knowledge and meditation. The Eternal created the world by the Word which is incarnated in the sacred language and in the ritual word which contains the primordial essence. A closed book keeps its secret. An open book instructs the one who reads it, unveils what is hidden.
4.3. The Dual Message of the Bible
This book contains a double message. The first contains an external teaching, represented by dogmas and a moral law of an exoteric nature. The second message develops a cosmogony, contains a symbolic message to be deciphered which is of an esoteric nature. The second does not exclude the first, but on the contrary illuminates it by opening onto the indefinite field of possibilities and makes it possible to go beyond the narrow limits of duality.
Many regular Masons, attached to universal Freemasonry, consider that the Volume of Sacred Law contains the message of a timeless Tradition, this being the expression of the relationship between Truth and Wisdom. But at a lower level, it contains a moral law on which every Freemason should rely.
4.4. The Esoteric Approach
Regarding this esoteric approach, it is undeniable that several biblical passages convey a hidden message. The double-meaning verses are easily identifiable because they are preceded by a signal such as the expression “In the beginning” which can also be translated as “in the Principle”. Genesis, as well as certain passages from the Pentateuch, the Apocalypse and especially the Gospel according to Saint John are only really clear after decryption. It is therefore by symbolic will that, during the duration of the Works of a Lodge, the Volume of Sacred Law is open to the Prologue of John. It is also by reference to the Prologue that Freemasons are sometimes called “Children of Light,” a name which expresses one of the pillars of speculative Freemasonry.
4.5. The Gospel of John and Freemasonry
The Gospel according to Saint John proclaims Christ as Logos. It is stated there, not as coming to redeem the human race but as bringing Light to men, by instilling in them the necessity of regeneration, because the Gospel of John mainly develops four axes which challenge every Freemason beyond his personal sensitivity in the perception of the Great Architect of the Universe:
1°) the enunciation of the message of Love;
2°) the teaching of the equality of all men, universal brotherhood, forgiveness of offenses and the unity of God;
3°) the introduction of a rite of fraternity by the sharing of bread and wine which are his flesh and his blood as a materialization of the solar rays, that is to say, for us, earthlings, the manifestation of Life;
4°) the proposal to meditate or pray in all places and not in specific places, which means meditating or praying in spirit and not by mechanical prayers emptied of all real content.
By stating “God is Spirit,” “God has given us of his spirit” and “God is Love,” John expresses the fusion of Knowledge and Love. The fourth Gospel is therefore in conformity with Masonic gnosis.
5. Arrangement of the Square and Compass on the Autel
During the Opening of the Works, the Worshipful Master stands in front of the Altar to correctly arrange the Three Great Lights of Freemasonry. It is the responsibility of the Worshipful Master, and him alone, to open the Volume of Sacred Law and to place the Square and Compass on it, in a manner specific to each degree to which the Lodge is preparing to work. In the Rectified Scottish Rite, it is the role of the Master of Ceremonies Brother to proceed with the particular arrangement of the three Great Lights as well as the Trowel and the small Sword.
5.1. Different Arrangements of the Square and Compass
On the Bible open to the Prologue of Saint John, the Square and Compass can be placed in three different ways but the Compass is always open to 45°. These arrangements evoke moral progress or a hierarchy of values. They constitute in a way distinctive signs of each of the three degrees and proceed from allegory.
5.1.1. Apprentice Degree
In the Apprentice grade, we see that the Square covers both branches of the Compass. It would seem that this is to indicate that in this grade we cannot ask more of the Neophyte than SINCERITY and TRUST, natural consequences of uprightness and rectitude.
Indeed, we cannot already ask the Apprentice for the Wisdom that he has not yet acquired. His natural probity and rectitude are all that the Masters expect of him, mainly the Second Overseer. Matter takes precedence over Spirit.
By this arrangement, the Apprentice is told that he is working on matter. His role consists of roughing out the rough Stone with the only tools available to him, the Mallet and the Chisel. He does not know what the building will be because he has not had knowledge of the plans.
5.1.2. Other Degrees
I will not reveal anything to you concerning the other degrees.
But it should also be noted that, in the horizontal plane of the Altar of oaths, the points of the Compass are turned towards the West and that the Square is always open towards the East. This means that the Mason must not behave as a pure spirit but on the contrary put into practice what he discovers or learns.
Remaining in the purely speculative domain is a sterile behavior, without real utility. On the other hand, he must not remain a prisoner of matter but he must strive to dominate it by elevating himself in order to live in harmony with the world.
5.2. Practical Application of Masonic Principles
This is what concerns the altar and the symbols that are highlighted there at each of our Meetings. Let us recall, if necessary, that the title of this board is “The Altar of oaths.” This is why I will now address the question of its usefulness and develop some considerations about our oath.
6. Considerations on Our Oath
During our Initiation, we all pledged by our oath to respect the Constitution, the General Regulations of our Obedience and the Special Regulations of our Lodge.
6.1. The Obligations of the Oath
Taken with the right hand ungloved and placed on the Volume of Sacred Law so that we commit ourselves on what is most sacred, our oath enjoins us:
- to keep the secret;
- to remain faithful and discreet, that is to say, not to betray either the Masonic Order or our Brothers;
- to persevere in improvement, that is to say, to walk on the path of Initiation.
6.2. The Significance of Renouncing Freedom
By any solemn oath, man renounces a certain part of his freedom, which he does before an authority that has the power in all places and at all times to note a breach of this renunciation and to punish it.
On this subject, René Désaguliers wondered: “What can be such an authority if not a God or the one God?” It is this aspect that is more particularly marked in the Latin word “sacramentum,” from which the term “oath” derives directly. “Sacramentum” is linked to the word “sacer” which means sacred or what belongs to the divine world.
For me, the oath is an essential act of Freemasonry.
An extremely ancient practice of humanity, the oath is obligatorily sanctioned by an authority superior to man, by a transcendence capable of judging him. In Freemasonry, the oath consists of a solemn promise made by the Neophyte who undertakes to keep the secrets of Freemasonry and to conform in all things to the regulations of the Order, in accordance with the laws in force in the country.
6.3. The Solemn and Sacred Nature of the Oath
The oath is imbued with a solemn character, the gravity of a pact, the extreme seriousness of the indissoluble commitment between the one who takes it and the one who receives it.
This initiatory oath also has an ancient and sacred character. It is pronounced of the free will of the Recipient, without constraint and before an assembly of Masonic witnesses who will become his Brothers and in the presence of the principle of the Order.
This specific oath is broken down into three parts: an invocation, a promise, an imprecation. Most often, and in any case in our Regular Obedience, the invocation is made to the Glory of the Great Architect of the Universe.
The oath is taken on the Bible, always open to the Prologue of the Gospel of Saint John. We can therefore consider that our oath has a character of cosmic alliance with the Supreme Being, with the Eternal, with the Great Architect, with God, according to your most intimate and personal convictions.
It is a reciprocal obligation freely consented to between the Order and the Neophyte who is accepted as a new link in the initiatory chain. This promise of a solemn character commits our entire being to be faithful.
7. Concluding Remarks
The Square, the Compass and the Volume of Sacred Law make up what we call “the Three Great Lights” of Traditional Masonry. They are placed on the altar of oaths. The Volume of Sacred Law is symbolically opened at the beginning and closed at the end of the Works to mark the necessary but temporary break with the profane world.
These symbols place the oath-taking of regular Freemasons in the spiritual dimension that characterizes the rites practiced at the Regular Grand Lodge of Belgium. This sacred character underlines the importance of the Masonic oath, its intangible and inviolable character.
They also mean, by their dynamic association – all three at the same time – that this sacred dimension is not confused with the sacred of a particular religion, because the Volume of Sacred Law is considered in its association with the Square and the Compass, as the symbol of a Tradition and not that of a theological reference.
It is once again a question of preserving in this area the freedom of conscience of each of those who commit themselves to our Regular Obedience and of encouraging them to build human relations that are tolerant and respectful of the diversity of cultures and civilizations.
7.1. The Importance of Spiritual Dimension
The Autel des Serments is a sacred space that underscores the importance of the spiritual dimension in Freemasonry. It is a place where Freemasons take their solemn oaths and commit themselves to the principles of the Order.
7.2. Freedom of Conscience and Tolerance
The Autel des Serments also symbolizes the freedom of conscience and tolerance that are essential to Freemasonry. Freemasons are encouraged to build human relations that are tolerant and respectful of the diversity of cultures and civilizations.
